Lava meal is, as the name suggests, flour from lava rock. For centuries, volcanically enriched soil has been known to be enormously fertile. Moving close to volcanoes is of course not necessary, because with lava flour you enrich the soil of your garden in no time. Lava meal has several advantages. Besides making your garden as fertile as the most fertile soils on earth, it also helps control and prevent pests. This makes lava meal fertiliser very widely applicable.

Why choose lava meal?

Lava meal's main function is soil improvement. It improves water and air circulation in both sandy and clay soils. It also contains numerous useful minerals that feed your plants and keep them healthy. As all these minerals come from natural lava rock, this fertiliser is also extremely suitable for organic gardens and vegetable gardens. In fact, it has a side effect that combats pests and diseases thanks to its rich amount of silicon. Pests such as aphids and slugs hate lava meal. When you scatter lava pellets or lava meal around your plants, you easily create a slug barrier. It also combats stubborn mosses and acid-loving weeds. A good example is horsetail. You can control these with lava meal or lava pellets. This is because horsetail and mosses grow mainly in mineral- and nutrient-poor soil. By applying lava meal, you can replenish the mineral and nutrient levels and prevent the growth of these weeds and mosses.

Advantages of lava meal?

  • Lava meal is very finely pulverised and ideal for spreading with a powder sprayer.
  • The flour improves the water and air balance of clay soils.
  • As the flour comes from rock, it is suitable for all gardens including organic and vegan gardens.
  • Contains no organic matter and thus does not retain nutrients unnecessarily.
  • Also helps control horsetail and mosses.
  • Lava rock can also be used for nuisances caused by snails, aphids and more.

How do I apply lava meal?

Lava meal is a powder and can therefore be simply and quickly sprinkled over lawn/garden. This can be done by hand or with a powder sprayer. This is best done on a rainy day or just before watering. You do this to avoid burning the leaves. You can apply the lava meal in two ways. You can sprinkle it and soak it into the soil or atomise the powder to apply it directly.

Incorporate Spray*

Full soil 100 to 300 kg/m²** 200 to 300 g/100m²

Potting soil 5 to 10 g/L** -

Kitchen garden 100 kg/m²** 200 to 300 g/100m²

* Repeat every 2 to 3 weeks between March and October.
** When controlling fungi, slugs and aphids, 50 g/m² is sufficient.

Tip: Dissolve the powder in water to apply directly at once with a watering can. Note that the powder does not dissolve completely so stir well to ensure even distribution.
