What are flower mixtures?

Flower mixtures consist of a mix of several flowers that go well together. Consider factors such as sowing and flowering time. The colour and growth height of the plants are also taken into account. Because the mixes are carefully composed, there is at least one plant in bloom all year round. With a sophisticated flower mix, you can flourish anywhere. Sowing can be done along public green spaces such as roadside verges, ditches and other fallow land. Flower mixtures can be sown in the garden, for example in the border, but you can also sow flower seeds through the lawn to create a somewhat rough, lush look.

Different types of flower mixtures

Flower mixtures are available in different types, colours, shapes and sizes. Get to know our range so that you will soon be able to make a good choice of a suitable mixture. We have listed all categories below:

Wildflower mixtures

Wildflowers are plants that grow naturally in the wild. They can be found in and around forests, meadows and fields. The best-known species are the poppy and cornflower. Wildflower mixtures are known for their great diversity. In fact, they often contain dozens of different plants. With a field full of wild flowers, you add colour to your garden and help birds and insects find their homes. And they could use your help, because biodiversity has unfortunately suffered some dents in recent years. By sowing wild flowers, you help maintain the endangered insect population.

Flowers for bees

A bee mixture consists of a mix of specific wild flowers that have an extra high appeal to wild bees, honey bees and bumblebees. Bee flowers are a great food source for pollinators. They take full advantage of this by visiting your garden regularly. They then proceed to pollinate your perennials, vegetables and fruit with their pollen. The result? Richly flowering plants in the border and healthy, fat fruits in the vegetable garden.

Summer flowers

Summer flowers undoubtedly make you feel like you're on holiday, but in your own garden! Our summer flower mixtures feature true classics like dahlias and gold flowers. Not forgetting, of course, sunflower seeds. Low bloomers to giant sunflowers; we really do have it all! These plants bloom all summer long, often well into autumn. Imagine yourself in summer moods and bring lots of cheerful shades of colour to your garden with our summer flowers.

Indigenous flower mixtures

Indigenous flower mixtures are mixes of flowers that occur naturally in the Netherlands and in parts of Belgium and Germany. These plants have a positive effect on our ecosystem and biodiversity. They act as host plants for butterflies and bees. They also provide shelter for these insects. The plants contained in native flower mixtures are well established. Their advantage is that they are adapted to the weather conditions and soils found in our country.

Special flower mixtures

Under the ‘special mixtures’ category, you will find all kinds of specific flower mixtures. This category includes cut flowers. Cut flowers, also called pick flowers, are annual plants that are sown for picking/cutting from the garden. These flower mixtures contain elegant varieties that sometimes produce new flowers for months. When sowing a pick or cut flower mixture, you could use some inspiration. For example, you can cut the picking flowers and then use them to compose a colourful field bouquet. Some flowers can also be dried, after which they make beautiful decorations.

Flower mixture shade

Another alternative mixture you will find in this category is the Shade flower mixture. Many plants need at least four hours of sunshine a day to grow and flower well. For a south-facing garden, this is not a problem as the sun takes over here. Some gardens are largely in shade. In this case, it is more difficult to sow a flower meadow. But not if you use a mixture with plants that are able to develop themselves into full-sized plants even under difficult growing conditions. Flower mixture shade consists of a mix of colourful flowers like foxglove and wild aquilegia.

Benefits of spreading flower mixtures

Sowing a flower mixture has many advantages. The (native) flowers increase biodiversity. The host plants create a colourful flower oasis that makes useful, pollinating insects very happy. A flower mixture also provides you with a low-maintenance garden. Flower meadows generally require little care. Perennial flowers only need to be mowed once or twice a year. Some flower mixtures, such as Buzzy's flower/herb mixture, actively help you to naturally control the oak processionary caterpillar. The oak processionary control mixture consists exclusively of flowers that have a high attraction to parasitic flies, parasitic wasps, beetles and also great tits, among others. The latter fight the oak processionary caterpillar by chewing it up.

When can I scatter the seeds of flower mixtures?

Flower mixtures can be sown from March until October at the latest. The best time to do this depends on the type of mixture. For convenience, we distinguish between two types of flower mixtures:

Annual flower mixtures

Annual flowers only last for one year. This means, therefore, that if you sow the flowers in spring, they will be in bloom by the following summer. It is important not to sow annual flower seeds too late. The ideal sowing period is from March to early June at the latest. The same also applies to flower mixtures that contain both annual and biennial flowers.

Perennial flower mixtures

Perennial flower mixtures usually survive three years; sometimes even longer if properly maintained. When you sow these flower seeds, they will use them during the first growing season to form green leaves and develop a healthy root system. This forms the basis for success during subsequent years when these flowers will bloom profusely. The first year of life is therefore crucial. Therefore, give perennial flower seeds enough time to develop themselves by sowing such mixtures during spring or summer (from April to mid-August).

How do I scatter the seeds of flower mixtures?

Flower mixtures can be spread thinly. In general, you can sow about one square metre with two grams of flower seeds. Each seed will eventually develop into a flower, so give the flowers room to grow and bloom. Flower mixtures can simply be sown by hand. For sowing large areas, you could also use a sowing machine. Spreading flower mixtures can be tricky, though, as flower seeds differ in structure and size. Sprinkle the flower seeds evenly over a sparse patch of soil, in a place with sufficient sunshine. Sowing flower seeds is a matter of patience. Above all, let nature take its course.

How long do the flowers of the mixtures bloom?

A flower mix consists of numerous plants. Each plant has a specific flowering period. Some of them bloom at the same time, while other flowers will bloom at a different time of year. You will soon notice this, especially if you have a mix of annual and perennial flowers. If the weather and growing conditions lend themselves to it, almost all flowers will continue to bloom for a long time. Depending on the type, you can usually enjoy blooming wildflowers throughout spring and summer.

How do I care for flowers from flower mixtures?

Good news! Flower mixtures require little maintenance. To preserve the flowers, certain actions can be taken throughout the year. Funnily enough, maintenance starts when the flower meadow is completely finished flowering. When this is the case, you should take action by mowing the plants at a height of about five centimetres. We recommend not disposing of the clippings immediately. After you leave the clippings for a few days and let them dry, you can start beating the clippings with a spade. This will cause the seeds to fall out of the spikes. With any luck, these seeds will grow back into beautiful flowers the next growing season. (Wild) flower meadows need no further maintenance. Thus, fertilisation of the soil can be omitted. After all, flower meadows are at their best with minimal fertilisation; i.e. on poor soil.
