Green manure crops are crops that can be sown to maintain and encourage good soil structure. By applying green manure, you have a sustainable vegetable garden at your fingertips. This is because green manure crops add a lot of organic matter to the soil. These organic substances make the soil more workable. Green manure crops protect the soil against erosion and provide better overall moisture management. Besides improving the soil, sowing green manures brings many other benefits!
What is green manure?
Green manures are crops/plants that grow quickly. For this reason, green manure is often used in the professional sector in fields as an intermediate crop, between main crops. You can also apply green manures for private use. Green manures, which are often sown to replace artificial fertilisers, make organic (vegetable) gardening a lot easier.
Types of green manure crops
We distinguish between various types of green manure: legumes, crucifers, grasses and other green manures. Below, we have listed a number of popular crops for each type.
Leguminous plants
Leguminous green manures are sown because they have an excellent nitrogen supply capacity. Nitrogen prices have now skyrocketed following the huge increase in raw materials for gas production. Fortunately, leguminous crops offer not only a more sustainable solution, but also a cheaper one!
White clover - is a crop that controls fertilisation by feeding nitrogen to the grass. White clover is regularly overseeded in existing grasslands where cows graze. The addition of white clover enriches the grass with protein, thus making it tastier for cows. This results in higher milk yields.
Blue sweet lupin - is a crop with beautiful flowers that rises early and takes prominence. Blue lupin is a nitrogen fixer that is highly resistant to fungi and diseases. These green manure crops have few soil requirements, but thrive best on lime-poor soil.
Cruciferous
Cruciferous green manures improve soil fertility and increase crop resistance. You thus increase crop yields and reduce the risk of damage by diseases and fungi.
Yellow mustard - forms a good ground cover in no time. With its smooth emergence, this green manure suppresses weed growth. Yellow mustard is generally used for organic matter supply.
Leaf radish - is a crop widely sown in arable and kitchen gardens. This crop controls the common beet cyst nematodes that disrupt the growth process of crops. Besides controlling these nematodes, leaf radish fixes nitrogen well, provides good soil cover and combats weeds.
Grasses
Grasses are also excellent green manure crops. Grass provides high yields and high forage values at mowing and it improves the soil for maximising inputs of organic matter.
Winter rye - is a crop that is ideally suited as a green manure crop to replace crops such as leafy greens that give way late in the year. Winter rye can still be sown until early autumn because it has a fast (and good) ground cover. Winter rye is good at building up a large amount of nitrogen and organic matter.
Italian ryegrass - is a grass used as a green manure crop. This type of ryegrass has an even higher fresh and dry matter yield than ryegrass. The grass has a wide range of uses. Italian ryegrass is tasty for cattle, but you can also use it in the vegetable garden when sowing and harvesting potatoes, carrots, onions and spinach, among other things.
Sowing green manure in the vegetable garden
As you have read by now, green manures come in handy in the vegetable garden. Green manure is a nice addition to vegetable garden fertiliser. But what is the best way to sow green manures? It actually works quite simply. Most green manure crops such as clovers, yellow mustard, lupin and vetch can simply be sown by hand, just like grass seed. If you need to work larger areas, you can also always use a hand spreader or a spreader truck. Some green manures need to be machine-seeded. Think of winter rye and oats. Sowing can be done from March to October.
What are the advantages of green manures?
One advantage of green manures is that they provide the soil with organic matter. Green manures also fix nitrogen from the air into the soil. The continuous supply of organic matter and nitrogen means that you do not have to fertilise the lawn as often. Because less fertilisation is required, you immediately save money in maintenance costs. Green manure crops improve soil structure and activate soil life. Green manure crops prevent the leaching of useful nutrients such as minerals and help you prevent and suppress weeds. Green manure is not necessarily known for its high ornamental value, but some crops are certainly worth seeing. Think of Phacelia, for instance. This crop blooms with beautiful purple flowers. In addition, it brings many other benefits.
