Buying lawn lime?

Lawn lime is the solution for balancing soil acidity. It consists of finely ground limestone and is used to optimise the pH level of your lawn and garden. By making the soil less acidic, the absorption of essential nutrients is improved, contributing to healthy grass and plant growth. With proper application, often during the growing season and based on a soil test, you lay the foundation for a strong and radiant lawn.

Why spread lime on the grass?

Lawn lime is indispensable for a healthy lawn. It neutralises the acidity (pH value) of the soil, allowing better absorption of nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. This results in a strong lawn, less moss and an improved soil structure. In addition, lime makes the lawn more resilient to weeds and other threats.

Yellow grass is counteracted with lime. Also, by spreading lime, you can prevent your grass from weakening. In addition, lawn lime often contains magnesium, which ensures a fresh green colour. In short: lime is the basis for a strong lawn that stays in tip-top shape all year round.

When to apply lime to the lawn?

The best time to spread lime on your lawn is twice a year: in February and October.

  • Spring: Sprinkle lime in February so that the lawn is optimally prepared for the growing season. After winter, the grass needs extra nutrition to grow again.
  • Autumn: In October, lime helps restore acidity and prevent moss formation during winter.

Note: spreading lime when it rains is preferable. Preferably sprinkle lime on your grass when it has rained, as moisture helps the lime dissolve faster and do its job. So which month to sprinkle lime depends mainly on the weather.

How often should I apply lime?

For best results, we recommend spreading lime twice a year, depending on soil conditions. Regularly check the pH value of the soil. Is it below 6.0? Then lime is needed. Note that too high a pH (>7.0) can lead to a lack of essential nutrients such as iron and manganese. A soil analysis will help you determine the ideal amount of lime for your garden.

How much lime to sprinkle on the lawn?

Generally, 10 to 15 kilograms per 100 m² is recommended, but this depends on the acidity of the soil and the type of lime. Be careful though, as an excess of lime can make the soil too alkaline. This hinders nutrient absorption and thus lime can damage the grass. Therefore, always carry out a soil test to determine the right amount.

What is the best way to spread lime?

Spreading lime on the lawn can be done in different ways, depending on the size of your lawn. For small lawns, you can spread lime by hand, but make sure it is evenly distributed. For larger lawns, a spreader is ideal as it ensures consistent distribution. Preferably sprinkle just before or during a rain shower so that the lime is quickly absorbed into the soil. Never combine lime with sowing grass seed; wait several weeks between the two to avoid disrupting its action.

Types of lawn lime

There are several types of lawn lime, including granular lime, seaweed lime, powdered lime and lawn fertiliser with lime. Iron sulphate is often confused with lawn lime, but this is a different product with the purpose of controlling moss.

Granular lime

Granulated lime is finely ground limestone in pellet form. Granulated lime dissolves quickly in the soil and has a long-lasting effect. Ideal for a stable pH value.

Seaweed lime

This type of lime comes from seaweed and is rich in natural minerals. Seaweed lime not only improves pH but also stimulates microbial activity in the soil.

Lime powder

Lime powder is fine and works quickly, but can be difficult to spread. Preferably use it with a spreader for even application.

Lawn fertiliser with lime

This combination product of fertiliser and lime not only feeds the grass, but also corrects the pH level at the same time. Ideal for those who want to work efficiently.
