Maintaining the garden by spreading garden fertiliser is an important job. Plants need annual nutrition to stay healthy and perform well. By enriching the soil with garden fertiliser, you ensure that the lawn and plants grow better, build higher resistance and are thus less susceptible to fungi and diseases.
What is garden fertiliser?
With garden fertiliser, you provide everything that grows and flourishes in the garden with the nutrients it needs. By spreading an organic garden fertiliser, you maintain a nutrient-rich soil on which plants like hydrangeas, roses, lavender and box hedges can grow and bloom well. You also strengthen the plants with a suitable garden fertiliser. For everything that grows in the garden, we have a suitable fertiliser in our range.
Among others, we have ornamental garden fertiliser, suitable for fertilising all green and flowering plants in the ornamental garden. This category includes fertilisers for specific plants such as lavender and roses. We also have organic fertiliser for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons, hydrangeas and azaleas. Fertilisers for ornamental gardens have trace elements such as iron and magnesium in addition to the important NPK nutrients.
What makes a good garden fertiliser?
The composition of the garden fertiliser determines its suitability for the spreading purpose. If you want to fertilise your tomatoes and potatoes in the kitchen garden, you need a fertiliser with extra high amounts of potassium. Whereas the plants in your ornamental garden are better fertilised with a fertiliser which ideally contains more nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P). When choosing a good garden fertiliser, the composition of nutrients is leading.
Which garden fertiliser is suitable for my lawn?
Which garden fertiliser is best to use depends on the situation of the soil and the state of the lawn. If you have poor, depleted soil, consider using an organic fertiliser. Organic fertilisers feed not only the grass, but also the soil. The added trace elements and micro-organisms improve the soil structure. If you want to give your lawn a big boost, you can spread artificial fertiliser. Artificial fertilisers have a generous NPK ratio, giving the grass a growth spurt in no time. For fast action and instant results, artificial fertiliser is the best lawn fertiliser.
Garden fertiliser for your vegetable garden
For the vegetable gardeners among us, we have vegetable garden fertiliser. Because yes, your vegetables, fruit and herbs in the vegetable garden also need fertiliser. Annual fertilisation is necessary to give the crop a growth boost. It also contributes to a healthy harvest with thick fruit. Hedges, such as the well-known boxwood hedge, also need fertiliser. Box hedges are real big users when it comes to gobbling up nutrients from the soil. Spreading boxwood fertiliser maintains the nutrients in the soil and will help the needles of the boxwood hedge retain a dark green colour. A garden fertiliser that you can spread on the lawn as well as in the border is cow manure pellets. The organic substances contained in cow manure help improve soil structure. This allows plants to better extract nutrients from the soil.
Ornamental garden fertiliser is a specially formulated fertiliser with a balanced mix of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) specifically designed to promote the growth, flowering and overall health of ornamental plants. This ornamental garden fertiliser may also contain trace elements for optimal plant growth. It is important to choose the right fertiliser based on plant needs and soil conditions, and follow the instructions on the package carefully to avoid over-fertilisation. A healthy soil structure is also essential for a thriving ornamental garden.
Organic garden fertiliser
Our personal preference is for an organic garden fertiliser. Organic garden fertiliser is an eco-friendly alternative to artificial fertilisers. Among organic garden fertilisers, we still distinguish between organic-mineral manure and 100% organic manure. An example of an organic-mineral garden fertiliser is Culterra Green 10+4+6. This fertiliser consists of at least 60% organic materials and the rest NPK nutrients. A 100% organic garden fertiliser consists of components derived entirely from plant and/or animal sources. Think, for example, of cow manure pellets. The advantage of organic garden manure is that they have a soil-improving effect and release a long-lasting stream of nutrition.
Organic garden fertiliser brings many more advantages:
- Long-lasting (after) effect of +/- 120 days thanks to controlled release of nutrients.
- Chance of burning when spread is minimal.
- Ensures an airy soil structure.
- Ensures even growth.
- Organic garden fertiliser is environmentally friendly.
NPKs in garden fertiliser
Almost every garden fertiliser consists of a combination of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These so-called NPK nutrients form the basis plants need to grow and survive. Nitrogen ensures plant growth, phosphorus for a healthy root system and potassium transports carbohydrates and water to the grass plant. Besides the important NPK nutrients, some garden fertilisers are further supplemented with trace elements such as magnesium and iron. Are you curious about how these trace elements work?
When to fertilise the garden?
Garden fertiliser can be used when the growing season arrives, from March at the earliest. The first fertilisation of the year can take place when the plants come out of hibernation and start growing again. A second fertilisation of plants in the ornamental garden and border can be spread at the end of spring or the beginning of summer. Usually two fertilisations a year are sufficient. Do you have sandy soil? Then it won't hurt to fertilise three times a year. This is because sandy soil is less nutritious than clay soil, for example. If you have sandy soil, the third fertilisation can take place from late summer until September.
Although it is often forgotten by many garden owners, it is nevertheless essential to fertilise the lawn as well. A healthy, green lawn cannot do without nutrition. Manure ensures that the soil is supplied with nutrients. Grass plants absorb nutrients from the soil so they can grow and stay healthy. A shortage of the important NPK nutrients often leads to diseases. The worst that can happen is that the grass can turn yellow and die. There will then be bare patches in the lawn. You want to avoid that, of course.
Graszaadselect.com therefore recommends fertilising the lawn with garden fertiliser three times a year:
- Lawn lime can be sprinkled from late February/early March. Lime ensures that the acidity of the soil is neutralised, so that (grass) plants can continue to absorb nutrients from the soil undisturbed.
- During the early summer months (June-July), the second fertilisation of the year can be done. Preferably do this with an organic fertiliser that has a long after-effect. DCM Fertiliser Vital Green is ideally suited for spreading during the summer. This fertiliser ensures the maintenance of a deep green grass colour throughout the summer. In addition, this fertiliser increases resistance, making the lawn more resistant to heat, drought, rain and intensive use.
- The last fertilisation of the year takes place in autumn. This is why Grass Seed Direct has a specific autumn fertiliser in its range. These fertilisers ensure that the grass is ‘hardened off’. This means that plants and grasses are made strong to survive the winter. Autumn fertiliser has a high potassium and iron content for a continuous, even supply of energy. In addition, most products also have magnesium. This ensures that the grass stays green.
How much garden fertiliser per m²?
The amount of garden fertiliser to use per square metre (m²) can vary depending on the type of fertiliser you have and the needs of the plants in your garden. Generally, it is recommended to follow the dosage advice given on the fertiliser's packaging.
Fertilisers are usually dosed in grams per square metre or kilograms per hectare. The exact dosage may vary depending on the NPK ratios of the fertiliser and the specific needs of the plants you are growing.
