Gardeners and farmers have known and used lava meal for years, but basalt meal is also a widely used product by both professionals and private gardeners. It is a product specifically used for (heavy) clay soils. The organic soil improver contains organic minerals and trace elements from young volcanic basalt rock. The flour is thus rich in silicon (silica), trace elements and minerals such as magnesium. In the soil, it separates the positive and negative ions, making the soil more workable. As a result, basalt meal improves the round structure of the clay soil by improving air and water circulation.
Why choose basalt meal?
Besides improving the air and water balance, basalt meal has other advantages. As the clay becomes more workable, the plants also benefit. For instance, the cell walls are strengthened by the minerals and it stimulates growth, but also roots of bulbous plants, among others, can root deeper and thus absorb nutrients and water more efficiently. Another advantage is that nitrogen is fixed in the soil. But by far the biggest advantage is the resistance-strengthening effect on plants. This keeps pests and diseases at bay and gives plants the best possible conditions to grow and flower. A smaller advantage is that rock flour like this basalt meal also has an insect-fighting effect. Thus, these flours work against aphids, spider mites, thrips and many other pests.

How to apply basalt meal?
Improve soil:
Basalt meal can be applied year-round to improve the soil. The best times are especially in spring and autumn. You won't get in the way of plant growth then and they can already benefit from it. You can easily sprinkle the flour over the surface you want to improve. If necessary, you can rake the flour so that it mixes well with the top 10 to 15 centimetres of soil. For standard soils, 15 kilograms per 100 m² is enough. For heavy soils such as clay soils, 20 to 25 kilograms per 100 m² is sufficient.
Insect control:
Basalt meal can also be used to control aphids, spider mites, thrips and other pest insects. Be aware, however, that beneficial insects such as ladybird larvae and even bees and bumblebees may also be affected. To avoid this, we recommend applying the basalt meal in the evening or early morning. Then the beneficial insects are not (yet) on the road and thus experience minimal nuisance from it.
